An October dawn at the Regulating Reservoir a few miles outside of Helena, Montana. Lots of ducks, and a Great Blue Heron rookery in spring, some of whose nests are commandeered by Canadian geese.

Freezeout Lake is a bird-watching paradise. Hundreds of thousands of snow geese and tundra swans pass through here each year around the Spring Equinox.

Our last night of a four-day backpack across the Crazy Mountains was at Campfire Lake. We saw dozens of mountain goats on the slopes across the lake, once we knew how to spot them.
